Tips for travelling solo

It can be very scary to travel alone to a new country, especially for the first time. You might end up imagining the worst possible outcome in any situation. Here we‘ve gathered some helpful tips for travelling solo!

1. Check for accommodation

When you‘re travelling alone you need a safe space to stay. So read recommendations of other solo travellers or maybe you have friends that travel alone and know some places to stay. There are also many guides you can find online.

And know what you‘re comfortable with. There are many hostels that offer rooms that you have to share with 5 other people. Some people take it as an opportunity to meet new people and save money since this is a lot cheaper than a room for yourself. Other people feel unsafe in a situation like this. You need to figure out if it‘s a viable option for you or not.

2. Stay in touch

Stay in touch with your friends and family. Tell them where you are and when you will change locations.

Figure out how to stay in contact before you leave, maybe you need to make some changes beforehand. This is probably important for your friends and family as well since they‘re the ones wondering if you arrived safely and how you‘re doing.

3. Learn the native language

It‘s always a good idea to learn the native language of the country you will be travelling to. No one expects you to be fluent and have perfect grammar but even just a couple of words can make a worlds difference.

In case you ever end up lost and need to ask for directions it‘s good if you have prepared yourself for a situation like this. Even though there are a lot of people that speak English you shouldn’t assume that everyone does. It‘s something that the natives will appreciate as well because they see that you made an effort before you got there.

4. Take pictures

This is more of a general tip than our other tips for travelling solo. Just take as many pictures as you can. This might be the first and only time you‘re going to visit a certain country and it‘s always nice to have some pictures to look back on.

You will have made some incredible memories and a picture will always be a little reminder of that. Your family and friends will also appreciate every picture you took because then they will be reassured that you really were safe and happy on your travels.

5. Go out

It might be scary at first to be in a country where you don’t know anyone and don‘t know what to expect. But to get to know people and to get around you need to go out! Just have a walk around the city, do some day trips and enjoy the nightlife! Just remember to be safe and trust your gut.

It‘s not easy to travel alone but I hope our tips for travelling solo helped you realize that it‘s not as scary as it seems.
