Hi! We are María and Miriam, two 21 years old students in Translation and Interpreting who come from Murcia, Spain. As you may know, Murcia is located in the south of Spain, so in summer it is reeeally hot (between 30°C and 40°C). That’s why we thought “what can we do not to melt? Well, let’s go to Ireland. Besides we are doing an internship…Cool!”
Now seriously, we were the whole year thinking about doing an internship in summer, but we couldn’t find a programme that we liked…until we found Partnership International!
The process to apply was really easy, and before noticing it, we were already on the plane saying goodbye to the sun for 6 weeks. Just kidding! In Cork it is sunny too…sometimes 😎
We have been so lucky to have the opportunity to work in an environment that is awesome! Everyone is very nice, there are people from different countries, and you are welcome every day with a big smile! Who wouldn’t like to translate like this?
We have been here for three weeks, and working is not the only thing we have done. We have visited the city, the museums, the crowded streets and the quietest places. Since it is relatively small, it is so easy to move around. Besides, Corkonians are such a kind people, they even say “bless you” when you sneeze in the street (it happened to us).
Pubs are a must! They are worth it. There is a great atmosphere and traditional music (sometimes live). We even learnt the traditional Irish dance! (kind of difficult but so funny).
We also visited the Cliffs of Moher. We went on a tour bus where we were told a bit of the history of Cork and also many curiosities…Did you know that Corkonians don’t have rain but “liquid sunshine”?
Now, let’s get down to business. The weather. If you are running away from melting like us, this is the perfect place to hide. A jacket is always welcome, even though sometimes the sun is up, and when there is no wind you can even get burnt! (True story). Piece of advice: don’t trust your mobile phone’s weather app…here you can have the four seasons in one day!
We run away from the boiling heat, but we miss the sun though (just a bit). We also miss homemade food…and guess what? Vegetables! Because eating pasta and chicken every day is a bit boring. So, if you know how to cook properly (we don’t) a good paella or Spanish omelette will help you overcome homesickness.
We still have 3 more weeks before going back home, but we already know that we are going to miss many things. We have learnt a lot and we hope to come back someday. For those who are thinking about doing an internship, we encourage you to do it with Partnership International. You won’t regret it!
That’s all folks! 😀
