Life is hectic for most of us. No matter who you are, you probably wish there were more hours in a day. Whether you are a student, a professional, parent or entrepreneur, we’ve all been guilty of wasting time. How to be a time management expert can be hard but we have to learn!

Create a daily plan

Plan your day before it happens. Do it in the morning or even better, the night before.

The plan gives you a good overview of how the day will pan out. That way, you don’t get caught off guard. You should allocate a time limit for each task

To help you stay on track with your daily goals set a timer on your phone or watch. That way you can achieve all your daily goals.

Prioritize wisely

Why not make your to-do list based on how important and urgent tasks are?

Looking at what goes into making up your day, where do your activities fit into these categories?

  • Important and urgent — Tasks that must be done. Do them right away.
  • Important but not urgent — Tasks that appear important, but upon closer examination aren’t. Decide when to do them.
  • Urgent but not important — Tasks that make the most “noise,” but when accomplished, have little or no lasting value. Delegate these if possible.
  • Not urgent and not important — Low-priority stuff that offers the illusion of “being busy.” Do them later.
  • Write down your three or four “important and urgent” tasks that must be addressed today. As you complete each one, check it off your list. This will provide you with a sense of accomplishment and can motivate you to tackle fewer essential items.

Eliminate distractions.

Start paying attention to the number of times someone interrupts you when you’re amid an important task. Learn to schedule meetings with friends, colleagues etc take control of your time.

Track self-induced interruptions too, particularly social media. Your smartphone is useful, but it’s also addictive and a major time-waster.

Be more ruthless with yourself and others. Schedule everything!   

Establish Routines and Stick to them as Much as Possible

While crises will arise, you’ll be much more productive if you can follow routines most of the time. For most people, creating and following a routine lets them get right down to the tasks of the day rather than frittering away time getting started.

Take care of yourself
