Summer camps are an American institution that remain as popular now as they were when the concept was created over 150 years ago. They are synonymous with great weather, team building, first love and friendship. Summer camps are also a unique opportunity to develop skills, gain valuable experience and make lifelong connections. Partnership International gives you the opportunity to escape the typical Irish summer and take on the role of a Camp Counsellor at one of many amazing camps across the U.S.
You will have the chance to become a role model for campers under your care, and will have the opportunity to make a real difference to their lives. You will also be paid for your work and get the chance to travel the country at the end of your stay!
Please note: The Camp USA programme is only available to Irish students.
Partnership International will assist you with each step of the application process. We will begin with a one-to-one conversation to explain the details of the programme, answer any questions you may have and learn more about you, so we can place you in the camp best suited to you!
A camp counsellor is an extremely important role in the running of a successful camp and comes with a large degree of responsibility as well as the opportunity to really enjoy yourself!
As a counsellor, your main job is to make camp a fun, friendly, and safe environment for campers. You’ll either be hired as an activity instructor or a general counsellor, depending on your skills and preferences. Whatever your job title, a camp counsellor is a jack-of-all-trades, and no two days will be the same. The main goal always though is to ensure the camp is as much fun as possible for everyone involved!
You are assigned to a group of campers, and you’ll be more directly involved with them than anyone else. You’ll sleep in the same area, eat at the same table, and go almost everywhere together. You’ll have a lot of responsibility, and for the summer, you become a teacher and role model for your campers. You’ll have the opportunity to make a big impact on your campers’ lives. As a general counsellor, you will participate or lead a variety of activities.
You will be responsible for planning, organising and teaching one or more specific activity areas – such as swimming, art, tennis or drama. You can expect to teach large groups of children throughout the summer. Usually, you’ll spend most of your time teaching your speciality to different children from various age groups. In some camps, you may work only as an activity counsellor. In others, you might have general counsellor responsibilities part of the time and work as an activity counsellor during the rest of your time.
Special needs counsellors’ work with campers of various ages who have a wide variety of disabilities. As a special needs counsellor, you may need to help bathe or lift campers. If you have experience working with people with special needs it’s a bonus, but previous experience isn’t required, as long as you are patient, energetic, have a respectful attitude toward people with disabilities. This is a role for people who are open to a challenging but also incredibly rewarding experience.

No two camps are alike. You can get a wide variety across the US, each with their own distinct ethos. It’s important to think about the type of camp that interests you the most before making your final decisions.
Usually owned and operated by individuals or families. These are among the most common types of camps. Most are located in areas surrounded by nature and have a focus on outdoor recreational activities. If you have an image of a typical US summer camp it probably looks like this one.
These camps sometimes host whole families. Parents and children participate in activities together or separately, and counsellors must be prepared to work with campers of all ages. Some adult camps are specifically for senior citizens.
Religious organisations operate many camps in the USA; Christian camps and Jewish camps are most common. Religious camps emphasise the value of their respective faiths through traditional camp activities. The level of religious involvement for staff varies from camp to camp.
At day camps, the campers come every day for a week or longer but go home at the end of each day. They don’t sleep at the camp. Day camps are located in a variety of settings, such as cities, college campuses and traditional camp sites. Staff members might live at the camp or with a host family.
These camps provide a positive experience for underprivileged children, usually from urban areas. Usually operated by non-profit organisations, these camps seek staff members who have a background in social work and/or experience working with youth groups. This can also be a very challenging but rewarding experience.
Special needs camps host children and/or adults with a variety of physical, mental, behavioural and/or learning disabilities. Counsellors lead many traditional and modified camp activities, and might assist individual campers with personal care, such as bathing or lifting. This can be a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience.
At these camps, kids participate in activities in a single-sex environment. Sometimes camps have a brother or sister camp nearby. Most scout camps fall under this category.

This experience have been really positive for me. I have learned how to live independently, how to value a lot of things (a job, a weekend, to do the shopping, to save money, to spend money in a responsible way, etc.). I also have demonstrated to myself that I am a professional and that I enjoy teaching a lot. Now I know that I am qualified to be a teacher in a different country with a different language. I recommend this programme for everybody because it is fantastic!
With my internship, organised by Partnership International, I got to visit many different Irish companies and was involved with introducing international students to them. I was also involved with inductions and orientations for foreign students. My work also included office administration. My colleagues were really nice so the working experience was very good. And I got to see a bit of Ireland while there. I’ve been to the Cliffs of Moher, a whiskey distillery, a falconry and many places more. So, overall it was a great experience and I would totally recommend it!
First of all, I really love Cork! The people are very nice and friendly. My placement was with a very cool and friendly company as well. I enjoyed the time with my cool colleagues and boss! My work was familiar to me because I translated documents like I am learning in Germany. I would recommend an internship in Cork for every student because it is worth it. You improve your language skills and learn the culture. The Irish accent is also very cool but funny as well! So, I really enjoyed my time here. Thank you Partnership International!
So after all, I have to say it was an absolutely great opportunity to get to know a new country/city, people and to make an intercultural experience. I am lucky that Partnership International organised everything so well and that they were hands-on to their students the entire trip. Thanks very much for everything and keep doing what you are doing! It will definitely not be my last time in Ireland and you helped me to open new ways! Cheers!
My internship has given me the opportunity to learn a lot and to improve my professional skills in a foreign language. It was a great opportunity for me to gain practical skills and work within a professional team. The lessons I learned as an intern are still with me today and I’m thankful to all the team of Partnership International who were a real pleasure to deal with. I would recommend an experience like this to everyone.
